Scientific-Based Research Study conducted by WestEd:
Evaluation of the First In Math® Online Mathematics Program

Education industry giant WestEd recently completed a scientific-based research study on the First In Math (FIM) Program in the National City School District in San Diego County. The evaluation involved 2,412 students in grades 3 through 6 and focused primarily on the impact of the FIM program on student achievement. The evaluation studied if the amount of time students spent on FIM affected their mathematics skills, and if participation in FIM had a positive effect on students’ attitudes.

2003-2004 Case Study: School District of Philadelphia, PA
The School District of Philadelphia began using the First In Math® online program in more than 2,600 third- through eighth-grade classrooms throughout the district during the 2003-2004 school year. The first-year implementation of the First In Math® program was a resounding success, with 2004 Pennsylvania State Standard Assessment (PSSA) results showing a significant increase in overall performance in math.

2000-2001 Case Study: San Diego County, CA *
More than 640 elementary- and middle-school classrooms throughout San Diego County received 24 game materials to be used with second- through eighth-grade students for a recommended average of five minutes per day. A U.S. Department of Education grant provided for Jumping Levels kits and/or 24 Game Mathematics Club kits to be sent to participating classrooms. Teachers were surveyed about the value of the program(s).

1994-1996 Case Study: Bronx, NY *
Year one: 1994-95. The Jumping Levels® program (which utilizes 24 game play, posters, award stickers and incentives) was piloted in grades two through nine throughout Community School District 8, reaching 750 classrooms in the district’s 29 schools. Classroom teachers were asked to incorporate use of the 24 game into classroom work, either five minutes per day or one period per week.

Year two: 1995-96. Study of incorporating the Jumping Levels program in classrooms was expanded to include CSD 7, 9 and 12

1994 Case Study: Diocese of Erie, PA *
The Diocese conducted a study to establish how the 24® game, when made part of the curriculum on a daily basis over an entire school year, would improve standardized test scores. The study has three tiers; classroom, school and district-wide.

* Background Information: Suntex introduced www.firstinmath.com and the First In Math® Online Team concept in 2002. First In Math® was preceeded by a program called Jumping Levels® that utilized 24® game play, posters, award stickers and incentives and employed many of the same basic features that would be later translated into the online version.
